Monthly Meeting: Greg McDonald

Greg will be talking about developing California native oaks as bonsai from collection and growing from seed to show trees.
Greg began his bonsai journey in the fall of 1999 after witnessing a redwood slab bonsai creation in Santa Cruz. He was instantly sold on the artform and began to pursue the acquisition of California native material. He has been influenced by all the NorCal bonsai practitioners from Santa Rosa to Monterey. Greg has studied seriously with Ryan Neil and Bjorn Bjorholm at workshops held at his residence in Placerville. Greg has also worked and studied with Peter Tea, Peter Adams, Katsumi Kinoshita, Jim Gremel and Eric Shrader. In 2014 and 2016, as exhibit chair, he organized the Cal Dreamin’ native exhibit for the GSBF and helped popularize our native material for bonsai. Greg is a 2 time exhibitor at the Pacific Bonsai Expo. Being a positive open minded –tree first– bonsai artist Greg is excited to share his knowledge and techniques.
Members are allowed to bring one ‘healthy’ oak for discussion.
